A Modern Day Maestro: The Misha Panfilov Catalog

by Skeme Richards

When it comes to the names of musicians and composers that we consider great, we often mention those whose music has withstood the test of time which often requires multiple listens just to take it all in to understand the depths and sheer genius of their compositions. Names like David Axelrod, Alan Hawkshaw, Piero Umiliani, Lalo Schifrin, Galt MacDermot and Alessandro Alessandroni to name a few have all found their way into that conversation. Individually, each of their catalogs contain a wealth of material and collectively they’ve filled collectors crates with
some of the most amazing music ever recorded. Cinematic, jazzy, funk filled and everything in between which has been used in the world of television and film and undeniably inspirational for many of today’s musicians and composers and used as a guide for reference.

In the present day, there has been a resurgence of artists creating works that are directly inspired by those of the past and who are connecting the dots to carry that music forward while creating new masterpieces. While many have their particular lane and sounds, there’s one name that comes to mind who dares to venture across genres and soundscapes and that individual is Misha Panfilov. Hailing from Estonia, the multi-instrumentalist and producer has recorded some of the most amazing, crate essential albums of the last decade. Misha Panfilov is a man who obviously never sleeps as his output of music is so frequent that he must live in the very space that he creates and records music. Within a short span of time, he has built a very impressive catalog not only under his given name but as various entities including Centre Électonique Muusa, Estrada Orchestra, Misha Panfilov Septet, Hanz Mambo & His Cigarettes and Penza Penza are amongst just a few.

Misha Panfilov is somewhat of an anomaly in how and what he creates. He knows no boundaries and seems to master whatever he sets out to record which is why I felt the need to capture some of my favorite recordings that he’s written and produced. He easily transitions from recording Jazz to Psych to Electronic while covering the spectrum of cinematic works, Library music and Funk 45’s. Throughout his creative journey to date, Misha has collaborated with and released a series of projects with another writer and musician, Shawn Lee who also holds his own in the world of music.

Releasing both full length albums and 7” singles on various labels including Funk Night Records, 2 Headed Deer, Miraaž Records, Stereophonk, Sulatron-records and Jazzagression Records makes it so that his release schedule is staggered and sounds varied over the course of dates which always gives fans and listeners something to look forward to. Misha Panfilov is a modern day maestro to say the least, a master at his craft and almost genius-like in the studio which shows here in my new cassette release featuring many of my favorite listens from his catalog. The challenging part was trying to figure out what to include and how to spread selections across what could possibly become a volume 2 in the series. But what you are about to press play on is pure magic and Misha Panfilov is the maestro creating it.

Dig today, dig tomorrow, dig always.
